From Our President

Wow! Just pulled in from Road to California. What a weekend!!! . I went with my sisters, Kathleen and Rosemary, and my quilt buddy, Norma. (Remember Kathleen? She's my identical twin sister, she caused a bit of confusion at our quilt show.) We learned so many new techniques. I can't wait to share them with you.

We shopped ‘til we dropped!!! I think the vendors broke all existing records for a Thursday turnout. That place was hopping! I bought all I could carry :o) I took Eleanor Burn's Egg Money Quilts class for 2 days. I hope to be sharing some of her innovative techniques during the next few months.

Please join us for the February meeting. I'll be sharing a few of these with you!!! Come pick up your "cheap trick", my special Valentine's Day gift to you!

Our February Program

Debbie Bowles writes and publishes innovative single quilt patterns for her company, Maple Island Quilts.

A new project book, Quilts for the Dorm, was released in 2005. Debbie has also written Cutting Curves from Straight Pieces and Dancing Quilts from Straight Pieces both published by American Quilters Society.

You may have seen Debbie on Simply Quilts shows #622 - Confusion and #749- Pagodas, on HGTV or DIY. She has also appeared on M'Liss's World of Quilts on PBS, series 100- #9 Snibbles and most recently on American Quilter, episode 11-Bent Pieces from Cutting Curves from Straight Pieces on the Lifetime Real Women channel.

See the quilts from Debbie's book Dancing Quilts from Straight Pieces, and enjoy demos of the techniques used to create the dancing segments. You will have fun watching what value and color relationships do to these quilt projects.  You can visit her computer site at

 BLOCK AUCTION is coming!!

Well ladies its that time of year!  Time to bring some of those projects or blocks you've made and want to make room for new things!

For those of you that do not know, every June we have what the Guild calls a "Block Auction".  This is where you bring "stuff" and our volunteers put the stuff together for you and others can bid on there treasures.  This is our way of raising money for the Guild.

If you have anything please bring it to the meetings and put it in the big box we will have at the back of the room.  Nothing too big please, because we have to store it in our homes.

Each month you will be getting more information.  Ready, set, start your cleaning!  See ya,

Gerry Hogan

 Membership News:

A big welcome to our newest members: Sue Alfieri, Carolyn Frieders, Nancy Beck, Bobbie Esselstein and Meredithe Herzog Katz.

Congratulations to the winner of the 'Name Badge' door prizes (thank you again Q is For Quilts and Quilts N Things for donating the beautiful FQ packets): Nancy Mowry, Merrilyn Lee, Jeannie Honadel and Maureen Grey.

Starting this month we will no longer hold a 'name badge' door prize drawing. Of course we still want you to wear your name badge and guild logo, but everybody who attends the meeting will have a chance to win one of the door prizes.

Also starting this month, the membership table(s) will be placed by the entrance (as in previous years). We will have sign-in sheet and all attending members will need to initial next to your name. You will then be given a raffle ticket for the door prize.

Exciting news: At the end of the year we will have a special prize drawing for attendance! So, naturally, the more meetings you attend, the more chances you get to win.

It's time to pay the annual membership dues. You can bring your payment (preferably checks) to the meeting, or send it in. Regular dues are $25, and $22 for members 55 and over.  Associates dues are $40.

* If you can't make this meeting, it is important to send the payment to me by February 18, 2006:

Fat Quarter Exchange

January's fat quarter drawing was won by Barbara Montejo and Judy Smith. They collected tons of "favorite things" from the basket.

Next month's theme is LOVE and ROMANCE.  So fans of Valentine's Day can win the drawing.  Of course, I love penguins, so you never know what Cherie inspired item may show up.

Our recent fat quarter baskets have had Halloween treats, beanie babies, and you'll just have to win to find out what else goes into it.

Love and Romance are the subject for February, Locomotion for March.

Locomotion? … whatever moves you.

Cherie and Caryl Jo

Block of the Month

Roberta Nickolson and Nancy Beck were the lucky winners of the beautiful blocks at the January meeting.  Congratulations.

The block for March is an easy block that only uses 2 fabrics.  Give it a try.  If you have any questions give me a call.

What is Painted Turtle Camp?

It is for any child who has ever felt alone because of a chronic or life-threatening illness, The Painted Turtle Camp is located in Lake Hughes in Los Angeles County.  The camp offers a place where he or she can laugh and play, climb and swim, and just be a kid among other kids for a week. More often than not, the effect of that week is a whole year's worth of positive self-esteem, and what will likely become a lifetime filled with special friends, self-confidence and self-respect.  The different guilds in southern California donate small quilts and bed size quilts for the campers.  The smaller quilts are given to each camper when he leaves.  Interested in donating a quilt?  Contact Barbara Spencer for more information or our new community service person, Helena Woodworth

What is the
Southern California Council of Quilt Guilds?

The council has members from different quilt guilds that represent their guilds and individual membership is welcomed.  The council meets quarterly at alternating sites provided by hostess guilds to discuss areas of interest to our member guilds, or our individual members who range from recreational quilters to professional quilters, and to our business members who own or operate quilt related business. At this time we have over 80 member guilds, from areas near central California, to Baja, Mexico, and east to Las Vegas, Nevada. Areas of concern or interest are researched and discussed, and information is disseminated to guilds through their representatives that attend meetings or receive our newsletters, and to our individual and business members. We believe this Council is a valuable resource that links quilt organizations and resources, and provides a forum for open and positive communication.

Love, Hope, and Comfort Project

All members and their friends are invited to help make quilts for the Michael Hoefflin Foundation on Saturday, February 4th from 8 – 5 at the Castaic Sports Complex.  The Foundation helps support children with cancer and their families in the Santa Clarita Valley.  They are in need of 130 quilts that are going to be given to newly diagnosed children during their very first hospital visit.  If you would like to donate a quilt, or help make one it would be greatly appreciated.  You may come and go to this event as you please.  Lunch is not provided so you may either brown bag it, or visit one of the fast food places close by.  We are in great need of batting.  Even small scraps that are at least 6 in sq can be used for ragtime quilts.  This is a wonderful organization that has helped my family in the past and I am trying to give back.  I can use every bit of help I can get.  For more information and directions, please call me, Jennifer Moore at 670-0242 or Helena Woodworth at 257-2572. Together, we can make a child's first stay at a hospital a more homey one.  Our quilts will hopefully provide these sick children, with hope, love, and comfort as they face their first chemotherapy treatment.
